Seychelles minnows Côte d’Or Football Club welcomes 2016 winners Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa at the Amitié Stadium on Saturday September 14, 2019.
Côte d’Or Football Club are in their third participation in the competition and were eliminated at the preliminary round in 2014 and 2017 that they previously took part in the competition.
They qualified for this stage of the competition on the away-goal rule after a 3-3 aggregate score line with Comoros outfit Fomboni FC.
The three times Seychelles league winners have a very difficult task against the South African heavy weights.
Experienced coach Pitso Mosimane’s Sundowns are making their 13th appearance in the competition. Sundowns reached the semi-finals in the 2018/2019 tournament. They are among the favourites to go all the way in the competition.
Sundowns qualified for the first round after they beat Congolese side AS Otoho 5-2 on aggregate in the preliminary stages.
Hlompho Kekana (suspended) and Sammy Seabi (not registered) are not available for this game for Mosiname’s team.
But Sundowns have more than capable backup with the likes of Andile Jali and Tiyani Mabunda.
“Probably we will change the team in Seychelles and everybody must get an opportunity to play and show us we can win. If it backfires we will sort it here [at home],” said Mosimane.
“We also have the MTN8, three tournaments in seven days. It’s not child’s play. It has got a different mood and mentality,” he added
The nine times South African champions are firm favourites to run-away with this one.
The game will not be televised.
