The 2020 CAF Champions League semi-finals and final is unlikely to happen in Cameroon, kick442.com can report.
Sources suggest that the government of the Central African nation has told the Confederation of African Football, CAF, that the current measures to combat the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic makes it impossible to host the event.
Cameroon was awarded the right to host the 2020 CAF Champions League Final in May this year, but was later postponed following the outbreak of the CoronaVirus pandemic.
Recently, CAF and the Cameroon government were negotiating organization of the rest of the competition’s three games this season in Douala in the month of September, but Kick442.com has gathered this Saturday evening that, CAF is now seeking a new venue for the rest of the event.
This Pan-African Sports News Agency equally gathered that CAF is looking for a new host in Africa though BeInsports is reporting that the rest of the competition is likely to take place in the United Arab Emirates.
Whichever venue is picked by CAF, Egyptian giants and most successful side in the history of the competition, Al Ahly will face Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca while Zamalek have Raja Casablanca on their plate, in a tailor-made Egypt-Morocco North African derby in the Champions League semi-final.
The outbreak of the Corona Virus pandemic across the continent since February this year completely douse football activities in Africa.
In May this year, this online portal reported that, if Cameroon fails to provide the environment and health guarantees needed for this event. Rwanda could be an option. The East African nation has a receptive travel policy, and its Sports sector resumes in September.
Rwanda is also one of the least affected country on the continent.
The potential resumption of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup will mark a new era in the life of football on the continent.
Elsewhere in the CAF Confederation Cup, RS Berkane have fellow Moroccans Hassania Agadir to worry about in the last huddle before the final, while Egyptian revelation Pyramids SC challenge Guinea’s Horoya in the Confederation Cup. These games are penciled for Morocco.
If Egypt bids and gets the Champions League final then both events will happen in North Africa.
