Antoine Max Effa

34 year old Cameroonian Born center Referee, Antoine Max Depadoux Effa who was handed a 1 year ban by the CAF referees commission in March 2019 has been cleared off the penalty and will take charge of the second leg CAF Confederation Cup game pitting AS Coton Tchad to Chabab Riadhi of Algeria.

Less than 6 months into his disciplinary sanctions, the commission that considered his performance worthy of getting a 1 year sanction have reserved their decision.

There has not been any further communication about the referees situation since after he was banned but a recent CAF document appointing Referees upcoming Confederation Cup fixtures carries Depadoux’s name as a center referee.

Origin of the story:

A statement on the CAF website from the Referees Commission in March stated as follows;

Following the weak and unsatisfactory performance which had an impact on the final result of the Match Day 4 Total CAF Confederation Cup between Renaissance Sportive de Berkane and Raja Club Athletic played on 3 March 2019 in Berkane, the CAF Referees Committee has decided to suspend referee Antoine MAX DEPADOUX EFFA ESSOUMA for one year.”

The referee put up a disappointing performance last season’s  CAF Confederation Cup game pitting RS Berkane to Raja Casablanca in Berkane. The Referee denied a clear goal and penalty for defending champions Raja Casablanca in the game. The Moroccan derby ended on a zero all score and led to the elimination of Raja from the competition.

Max had officiated Under 20 AFCON games earlier on before his poor outing was suspended but he is now back and gets to full action this month in Niger.

He will be assisted by Cameroonian refereeing trio Rodrique Menye, Oumarou Sanda and Blaise Yuven Ngwa.

Ngwa is varsely considered to be the next great Cameroonian referee coming through.

He made his AFCON debut in the 2019 Under 17 AFCON tournament in Tanzania where he was involved in 4 of the games at the tournament…
