Nigeria representatives competing at the second tier of African club football- the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday gave Nigeria fans mixed feelings one won, take a huge step to qualification while the other lost, ending the hope of qualification to the third round of the competition.
Enyimba of Aba defeated Al Ittihad of Libya at the Aba Township Stadium by two goals to nil courtesy of first half goals from Sadiq Abubakar and Victor Mbaoma in the 21st and 34th minutes respectively.
It could have been more in the second half, but no thanks to a wasteful Enyimba who could not put the ball at the back of the net to put the game beyond their visitors and make the second leg a formality.
The second leg will be played at a yet to be announced date by CAF in Libya.
For Rivers United, it was a sad tale as the Stanley Eguma led team could not salvage a point against Al-Masry SC of Egypt they were condemned to a loss through Grenado’s goal in the twelfth minutes of the game at the Borg El Arab Stadium
The Porthacourt boys had won a week ago in the first leg at the Aba Township Stadium in Nigeria and needed to avoid defeat.
Al-Masry hence qualified by the virtue of the away goal rule even with the aggregate at two all.
