Group B, C and D were already concluded going into the final match day and with group position also concluded in some group, in others it was all about who takes the top spot but it was a different story entirely in group A as all four teams stood the chance of progressing to the quarter-finals but it was Enyimba and Orlando Pirates who picked the two tickets.
Both Enyimba and Orlando Pirates had to slug it out at the Enyimba Int’l Stadium in Aba. With Enyimba’s only hope of progressing is a victory, Pirates needed a draw to finish as group winners and ofcourse it was going to be a difficult match but Enyimba had to wait till the 5th minute of additional time before booking their place in the next round and it was both teams who played in Nigeria that progressed.
When all hope seems lost , some fans leaving the stadium, Olisema rose to the occasion slotting home Anayo’s cross to give Enyimba the much needed victory.
Although ES Setif won their match against Al Ahli Benghazi in Algeria, the victory was of no use as it could only earn them a third place finish.
It was a perfect campaign for Raja Casablanca recording six victories in six games, finishing as the best team in the round.
The Moroccan who already picked up their quarter-final ticket after match day four defeated Zambia’s Nkana 2-0 in Casablanca. It was a perfect of perfect feet achieved by them with 18 points in six matches, 13 goals scored and none conceded.
In Cairo, last year’s runners-up Pyramids finished the group second on 12 points, after beating Tanzanian visitors Namungo 1-0.
Youngster Ibrahim Adel scored the game’s lone goal after 65 minutes making use of Ibrahim Hassan pass.
Jaraaf of Senegal finished the group C after playing a goalless draw against fellow qualifiers’ CS Sfaxien of Tunisia in Sfax.
Having both qualified prior to the final matchday, there was few action at Taib Mhiri Stadium as the game ended in a barren stalemate that left Jaraaf first on 10 points, one more than Sfaxien.
In group B, Algeria’s JS Kabylie secured group’s top spot by defeating Zambian debutants NAPSA Stars 2-1 in Tizi Ouzou while fellow quarter-finalists, Coton Sport of Cameroon finished second on nine points after suffering an away 2-1 defeat to holders and shock eliminated RS Berkane of Morocco in Berkane.
Enyimba, Orlando Pirates, JS Kabaylie, Coton Sport, Diaraf, CS Sfaxien, Raja Casablanca and Pyramids.
The draw for the quarter-finals is expected to take place on Friday.
