Enyimba International Football Club of Aba, on Sunday, qualified for the group stage of the 2020/2021 CAF Confederation Cup after eliminating fellow Nigerian side, Rivers United on penalty shoot out.
The People’s Elephant had a 1-0 advantage from the first leg but Fortune Omoniwari scored for Rivers United in the 43rd minute to equalise on aggregate taking the game to penalties.
Enyimba eventually defeated Rivers United 5-4 on penalties to seal a spot in the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup after dropping from the elite CAF Champions League.
Rivers United will now have to focus on the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) with the hope of returning to the continent next season.
Enyimba remain Nigeria’s sole representative on the continent with the elimination of Plateau United, Kano Pillars, and now Rivers United.
