The German Bundesliga has resumed behind closed doors, becoming the first major European football league to restart after the coronavirus shutdown. Apart from Dan-Axel Zagadou of Borussia Dortmund who was dropped due to injury, other
African footballers were fully in action for their clubs over the weekend and recorded mixed fortunes.
Pierre Kunde & Taiwo Awoniyi Malong-FSV Mainz 05
The African duo helped Mainz make a scintillating comeback to draw 2-2 with FC Köln of Nigerian-Dutch professional footballer Kingsley Ehizibue having conceded two goals before the halfmark.
22- year-old Nigerian super-sub Taiwo Awoniyi came off the bench for Dong-Won Ji and scored barely five minutes after making his entry as Mainz fought for a comeback.
Pierre Kunde Malong who played for 83 minutes netted a much needed equaliser (72nd min) to help Mainz grab a point from their League rivals. The Cameroonian midfielder put up an inspiring show in the build up to his first goal since returning to action and concluded with a superb low drive at the far corner. He was rated the most outstanding Mainz player of the game.
Köln 24-year-old Kingsley Ehizibue who is gifted with tackles played for 11 minutes to help limit further damage on his side.
Mainz are four points clear off relegation while Köln retain a top half spot.
Ibrahim Traore & Alassane Pléa-Borussia Munchenglabach
Alassane Pléa scored as Borussia M’glabach eased to victory over Eintrach Frankfurt 3-1.The 27-year-old forward who conveniently anchors play was born in France but is of Malian descent. He played almost full time in his side’s crucial away win.
His team mate 32-year-old left footed striker Ibrahim Traore was an unused substitute in the convincing display. The former VfB Stuttgart forward has not been regular since the start of the season.
Burussia M’glabach are just two places away from second placed Borussia Dortmund.
Omar Marmoush & Marcel Tisserand-Wolfburg
Wolfsburg made a great return to the German top tier League with a narrow 2-1 over Augsburg.
However, Egypt’s Omar Marmoush and Congolese defender Marcel Tisserand were both unused during the encounter. Both Africans could feature for Wolfsburg when they host Borussia Dortmund in four days at the Volkswagen Arena.
Christopher Nkunku-RB Leipzig
The French youth international has been a key figure for Leipzig scoring 4 goals with 11 assist. Returning after a period of lockdown brutally exposed the rising German football club.
RB Leipzig have droped to fourth place after a frustrating 1-1 draw against Frieburg at home. The Congolese national played for 81 minutes and had undenying problems on his return.
Moussa Diaby-Bayer 04 Leverkusen
The former Paris Saint Germain sensation had a decent outing for his side. He contributed to Leverkusen 4-1 win over Werder Bremen with two assist despite playing just for 61 minutes.
