In its first game (asides COSAFA Women’s
Championship) since winning the 2022 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco, Banyana Banyana of South Africa suffered a 3-0 loss to Copa America Femenina Champions, Selecao of Brazil in the first leg of both sides friendly encounter on Friday.
It took two late crucial goals in the first half for Brazil to take a commanding lead into the halftime break.
The first goal came in the 43rd minute through FC Barcelona Femeni’s new acquisition and 2021/2022 Spanish Primera Iberdrola joint top scorer, Geyse Ferreira.
Two minutes later, Corinthians forward, Adriana Maga doubled the lead for the South Americans at the Orlando Stadium.
The bench introduced two changes after the interval with Debinha and Kerolin Nicoli Israel Ferraz replacing Beatriz and Micaelly Brazil dos Santos respectively for Brazil.
Coach Desiree Ellis brought in Kholosa Biyana and Lebohang Ramalepe for Nomvula Kgoale and Jaine Van Wyk for South Africa.
Tamires in the 63rd minute converted Brazil’s third goal which ended the contest.
Both sides will meet again on September 5, 2022.
The teams are using the friendly game to prepare for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup as both have qualified for the tournament.
South Africa edged Morocco 2-1 to win the African title this year while Brazil pipped Colombia 1-0 to clinch the 2022 Copa America Femenina title.
