Former Ghanaian international Sarfo Gyamfi has revealed shocking happenings that contributed to Ghana’s inability to win the 1992 AFCON.
Ghana won the last African Cup of Nations trophy in 1982 and has not clinched the ultimate African title again despite the numerous finals they have reached.
Though the nation was blessed with a great squad in 1992, the trophy eluded Ghana due to international wrangling.
Confirming this to Don Summer of Angel FM, Sarfo Gyamfi said the 1992 squad was massive, and had it not been the wrangling, Ghana would have won the ultimate prize.
“We had a very good squad but the problems in the team were many.” He said.
It all started during our camping in Portugal. Though Abedi Pele was not around we won all our friendly matches. He joined us a few days to our departure to Senegal.
“When we were about to leave for Senegal, they called us for a meeting and told us that our Captain James Kwasi Appiah can’t speak French so they have given it to Abedi Pele and that was when the division started.”
“We had two factions. Accra camp and Kumasi camp,it didn’t end there.
“When we went to Senegal, after our semi final game against Nigeria Abedi Pele was suspended so we all thought the deputy captain Tony Yeboah would be the captain for our final match against Ivory Coast.
“Few minutes into the game, we were informed that Tony Baffoe will captain the team and that ended everything.
“I saw Tony Yeboah was down during the game so I joined the attack and urged him on and that was when he was able to hit the goalposts with strikes.
“We didn’t know who influenced it but we all thought it was Abedi who caused that because they were living in the same room.
“Had it not been this, Ghana could have won the game.” Sarfo Gyamfi popularly known as Black President told Angel FM, Kumasi.
Ivory Coast won the finals against Ghana 11-10 on penalties after the full time goalless draw display.
