FC Barcelona have lined up a move for Ajax Amsterdam and Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana in the next transfer window.
According to information filtering out of the Camp Nou, Onana has the profile of the kind of goalkeeper Barcelona will be in the market for.
Barcelona have tracked the progress of the La Masia youth product, since his departure to Ajax, where he has proven himself as a top shot-stopper.
Barca currently have a save pair of hands in-between the sticks in German goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and his contract runs until June 2022.
However, contract extension talks have not been smooth so the Blaugrana are looking for a possible solution before it’s too late.
Ter Stegen has been a key player for Barcelona in recent years, but contract extension talks have not been going according to plan, though both the player and the club are looking and hoping for a common ground to be found.
The player wants a wage increase but the club cannot guarantee that especially with the added financial challenges that they will have to face as a result of the ongoing global Coronavirus pandemic.
Barca’s current backup goalkeepers are Neto and Iñaki Peña. Neto has had some unimpressive performances already this season, first in the derby against Espanyol and in Supercopa in Saudi Arabia. He has been earmarked for a transfer.
On his part, Iñaki Peña is still a developing goalkeeper and they are rather considering to loan him out as part of his development.
There is therefore the need to have another top goalkeeper to challenge Ter Stegen, which explains why they want to bring back Onana to the club.
Due the age advantage Onana has, given that he is just 24, and his huge potential, Barca consider him as a worthy second choice goalkeeper who could even eventually replace Ter Stegen, if the German decides to take a new challenge elsewhere.
Onana has made his intentions of not wanting a contact extension with Ajax very clear to the Dutch club’s management. His current contract runs till June 2022.
He is valued at £40 million, although Ajax will definitely listen to offers slightly lower than that.
Onana has heavily been linked to Chelsea, who have not been convinced with the performances of their first choice goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Tottenham have also been mentioned, as the north London club is already considering a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris.
Andre Onana joint the popular and celebrated Barcelona Academy [La Masia] in 2010 from Samuel Eto’o Foundation [Fundesport] just like his compatriot Fabrice Ondoa had done a year earlier.
He spent six years at the academy, before joining Ajax.
The native of Nkol Ngok has been undisputed first choice goalkeeper at Ajax for the last three seasons and has won 16 caps with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.
