Banyana Banyana of South Africa defeated host, Atlas Lionesses of Morocco 2-1 in the final of TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2022) at the Stade Prince Moulay Hassan, Rabat on Saturday.
South Africa had the glorious chance of the first half as Khadija Er-Rmichi put her body on the line to deny Hildah Magaia from scoring the opening goal.
The pressure paid off in the second half when Hildah Magaia opened the scoring for Desiree Ellis’s side in the 63rd minute.
Hildah Magaia again in the 71st minute doubled the lead for Banyana Banyana.
Ten minutes from full-time, Tottenham forward, Rosella Ayane reduced the deficit for Morocco but that couldn’t hinder South Africa from claiming its first WAFCON title after previously losing its last four finals.
Morocco on the other hand is making its maiden final appearance at the tournament.
The victory ensured that either Nigeria or Equatorial Guinea didn’t win the trophy for the first time in the history of the competition.
Both teams will represent Africa alongside Zambia and Nigeria at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Cameroon and Senegal will attempt to qualify for the World Cup via the Inter-Confederation Playoffs Tournament next year.
