“Youth and Elite Uniting for a common vision and a fight against COVID-19 within the Municipality.” was the aim of the competition which saw its finals Sunday May 24, 2020. The three days outdoor finals was in three disciplines, Cross Country Race, Tennis and swimming of various categories.
The ongoing socio-political unrest in the region and the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has limited the training time of the youths and prevented them from taking part in sporting events and competitions. But the Mayor’s tournament now served as a boost as they called on the Mayor for more of such.
Nkeh Joel, one of the young stars in the Ayaba Tennis club who emerged victorious in the senior category of tennis, narrated the difficulties of this period and his victory.
“During this crisis and the coming of the coronavirus pandemic, i haven’t been able to train well, coupled with the ghost towns so it has really made me not to concerned. What I did today was mental focus and my opponent’s weakness and not physicality.”
“Thanks to the Mayor for this opportunity to return to the pitch and revive myself. I pray for more of such so that I can be fit again.” Joel added.
Joel won his game in 7-5, 6-2 against Bebong Stanley.
Youths in other disciplines like Iris Menju Anduochi, in swimming also called for more competitions.
“I fell very happy today for being part of this event. I also wish to call on the Mayor to give more competitions for us to be able to develop our inborn talents.”
Menju was overall best in the swimming competition returning home with two medals and a trophy.
To the Mayor who wishes to bring young people into power, “we need to ensure creativity.”
“Through this competition, we animate the spirit of peace, Love and unity for one another, during the ongoing armed conflict and intensify the fight against COVID-19.”
Many athletes and sports lovers have saluted the effort of the Mayor while hoping for better days ahead.
