The 2022 edition of the Total African Women’s Cup of Nations, AWCON has been scheduled to take place in July 2022 at a yet to be announced venue, www.kick442.com can report.
The decision was part of other key issues attended to by the Confederation of African Football, CAF on Thursday alongside the format for the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League.
The 2020 edition of the AWCON was cancelled amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and succour was initiated by CAF with the establishment of the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Super Falcons of Nigeria won the last edition of the tournament in 2018 beating South Africa on penalties. Nigeria is the most successful nation with 11 titles since the first edition in 1991 with Equitorial Guinea in a distant second with two titles.
Nigeria has also hosted the tournament three times in 1998, 2002, and 2006, emerging as Champions in all previous editions as host.
It now behoves on CAF to liaise with a country that will host the tournament earnestly in order to avoid further delay and postponement of the 2022 edition.
