It was as tough as a nail but Tunisian, Ons Jabeur battled her way through into the second round after beating Germany’s Andrea Petkovic on Monday at the hard court event.
The number 27 seed overcame Germany’s Andrea Petkovic, who is ranked at 102 in the world in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in a match that lasted for three hours.
She fired six aces and 45 winners but also made 58 unforced errors (14 more than her opponent) and only converted five out of a possible 14 break points.
The 26-year-old, Jabeur finished in the quarter finals of the Australian Open in 2020, her best finish at any Grand Slam and will hope to better that feat.
The highest ranked female Arab Tennis Player ever became the first Arab woman since fellow Tunisian Selima Sfar in 2005 to win a singles match Wimbledon.
She is also the first African and Arab woman to reach the fourth round of the French Open after beating 8th seed Sabalenka 7-6(7) 2-6 6-3.
Jabeur was the 2019 Arab Sportswoman of the Year.
She plays Russian Anna Karolína Schmiedlová next on Wednesday and a win will set up a potential third round meeting against world number three Naomi Osaka of Japan.
