In a match of grit and incredible physical battle, Egyptian Mayar Sherif loses to Kaja Juvan in the second round of the Australian Open on Thursday.
23-year-old Mayar had started quiet well, but the unmitigated will power of the 20-year-old Slovenian reigned supreme to end the celebrated Egyptian’s dream to make further history.
Kaja had to battle through two bouts of vomiting to finally subdued Sherif to win 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3 in the second-longest match of the 2021 Australian Open on the women’s side so far at 2hrs, 39 minutes.
Mayar Sherif took the opening set 6-3 over fellow qualifier Kaja Juvan in 41 minutes.
However, Kaja Juvan bounce back to take a 71-minute second set 7-6(2) over Mayar Sherif. Going 3 on 1573 Arena.
She continued strongly to win the third set 6-3 over disappointed Mayar.
