South African Lloyd Harris goes the distance and pulls off the five setter to outlast Alexei Popyrin in the second round of the Australian Open on Thursday.
Harris, in a marathon had to show real fighting spirit, as he edged the Australian, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, in a see-saw 3 hour match.
The match was fairly evenly contested , with Harris hitting 25 aces compared to Popyrin’s 21. Both players hit 49 winners, but Harris made less unforced errors (51 compared to 57).
The South African plays Mackenzie McDonald who qualified for the Australian Open initial round through his protected rank. He got a huge win over Borna Coric 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to reach the 3rd round of a Slam for the second time in his life.
