Reigning Africa Games Champion, Mayar Sherif has made it into the second round of the Australian Open after a hard fought 7-5, 7-5 win against Chloe Paquet.
Sherif scored the lone break in the 11th game of each set to beat fellow qualifier Chloë Paquet, .
She fired a forehand down-the-line winner to take the first set 7-5 in 45 minutes.
She hit 15 winners and 14 unforced errors. Landed 79% of her first serves, and converted the only break point of the set.
The Egyptian remained resolute in the second set to take the day.
She had beaten Aleksandra Krunić 6-1, 6-2 to move to the main draw of Australia Open becoming the first Egyptian woman to compete in the Australia Open main draw.
Mayan becomes the first Egyptian woman to win a match and reach the second round of a Grand Slam.
It will be remembered how she pushed Czech second seed Karolina Pliskova who had to come from a set down to defeat Sherif 6-7 (9-11) 6-2 6-4 in the French Open first round.
She plays Juvan or Konta in the next round of the Austrian Open.
