Security officials in Gabon have arrested a Gabonese football administrator and manager accused of sexually abusing teenage boys in the country.
According to confirmed media reports from Gabon Media Time news organ, Patrick Assoumou Eyi was arrested by Gabonese authorities on Monday December 20, 2021.
Sources confirm the accused landed in the drag net of Gabonese Judicial Police while he attempted fleeing the country for neighboring Equatorial Guinea.
He was arrested in a small community near Ntoum, a border locality closer to Equatorial Guinea.
Assoumou Eyi’s arrest comes hours after an executive order by Gabonese president, Ali Bongo ordered for his arrest within a 48 hour time frame.
Patrick Assoumou Eyi has been in the news last week when British news organ, The Guardian published an investigative report revealing his involvement in sexually abusing teenage boys while he was head coach of the Gabonese under17 boy’s national football team.
The reports revealed he sexually abused the young lads, promising the players playing time and position in the national team.
He also helped get young boys for other football officials to abuse.
Late last week, Gabonese Sports Ministry suspended Assoumou from sports related activities in the country including and relieved him from his duty as Technical Director in the country’s football federation, FEGAFOOT.
The accused has since declared innocence.
Assoumou Eyi in a statement barely an hour before his arrest on Monday, said he has no knowledge of the accusations and will remain mute on the topic.
“I do not know anything about that and am not responding to rumors. I left the national team in 2014 and on the eve of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, I was taken off from the technical bench, so I was not even part of the staff.” Patrick Assoumou said.
The arrest of the former football administrator and manager is expected to help facilitate investigations into the crisis that is believed to involve a massive chain of individuals engaged in such activities.
