Kenya’s tennis queen., Angella Okutoyi became the first girl from Kenya to win a Grand Slam juniors match after her win on Sunday at the first round Girls Singles of the Australian Open in Melbourne.
The 2021 African Junior champion came out victorious in the first match against Urgesi Federicaof Italia 2-16-4,6,7,6-3).
Currently ranked 60th on the ITF ranking, Okutoyi earned a spot to debut in Melbourne following her historic triumph at the AJC in Tunisia last Nov.
17 year old Angella Okutoyi is the first Kenyan to ever lift the African Junior Tennis Championship.
She saw off Moroccan Aya El Aouni 6-3, 6-3 to be crowned the 2021 Africa U-18 champion in Sousse, Tunisia.
With the feat, Okutoyi is the First Kenyan gilr and the 2nd Kenyan to play at the Australian Open. Paul Wekesa was first Kenyan.
She will face Australia’s Zara Larke in the second round after overcoming the Italian in the first round.
