Cameroon and Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper, Andre Onana Onana has rubbished media speculations that they could be a rift between him and his international colleague who doubles as his cousin Fabrice Joseph Ebogo Ondoa.
The products of the Samuel Eto’o’s Fundesport Academy who came through the ranks of Barcelona’s La Masia have created a selection problem for the Cameroon national team coaches in the last three years.
The rival between 24-year-old Ondoa and his cousin Onana, also 24 has seemingly been wrongly interpreted as the latter clarified through Douala-based radio RSI this Friday.
Despite being born four months apart, Ondoa is considered as the senior person between the two though Onana is playing as the highest level of European football, and Ondoa still struggling to be an established first-choice keeper at any European clubs.
Onana still remembers his humble beginnings.
“Well talking about Fabrice, I can say I am a year younger than him in the profession. What people forget is that we were together at Fundesport Academy in the beginning before switching to Barcelona,” Andre Onana told RSI.
The meteoric rise of the young keepers has been a fair story. Both of the keepers spent four years under coach Siewe Diallo.
In 2009 Ondoa left Cameroon for Barcelona’s La Masia and Onana followed him a year later.
Andre still remembers the Barcelona tale.
“Fabrice helped me a lot when I joined Barcelona. He had arrived a year before I came. It is obvious, we can only have a good relationship. He is my elder brother, and I owe him that respect in the national team. We are in a competition but we remain a family. Whenever we talk about the national team, we say, brother; ‘our family keeps goal for Cameroon’ it is a blessing,” Onana concluded.
Their brilliance of both keepers has put Cameroon in a position wherein they picked Ondoa of KV Ostende in 2017 AFCON and Onana during the 2019 competition for five-time African champions.
