ALP: USM Alger fires Francois Ciccolini after first competitive match
French coach Francois Ciccolini has been fired following his competitive debut with USM Alger for refusing to participate in a medal ceremony after a 2-1 loss to CR Belouizdad in the Algerian Super Cup.
Ciccolini, 58, was ready to embark on a new journey with the Algerian giants – but did not make it past the first match.
After losing in his debut, Ciccolini was adverse to picking up a loser’s medal and refused to go up to the tribune of honor to greet the Algerian higher-ups and collect his medal.
USM chairman Achour Djelloul was furious at the snub to Prime Minister Abdelaziz Djerad, saying: “Ciccolini made a mistake and has to pay. We have decided to fire him.”
The French tactician was in charge of fellow Algerian club JS Kabylie for two years from 2014
The dismissal of the coach apparetnly had no connection to the defeat in the Algerian Supercup, but only because of his refusal to climb to the tribune of honor.
The club decided to dismiss the Corsican coach because his gesture constituted an insult to the officials present at the tribune of honor, including the Algerian Prime Minister, the federation, the league and the structures, undermining the honor and the consideration.
In accordance with FAF regulations, François Ciccolini incurred a one-year suspension and a 500,000DA fine
