The Algerians are still basking in glory after their 2nd AFCON triumph since 1990, ending a 29 year barren period by winning the 32nd edition at the Cairo International Stadium on Friday, July 19th. A Bounedjah strike at the 2nd minute double-clicked off the back heel of Salif Sane and skinned the right side of the upright before catching everyone by surprise when it hit the back of the net.

The journey for Algeria began in group C when they sailed through to the round of 16’s after a hundred percent record;

Algeria 🇩🇿 2-0 🇰🇪 Kenya

Algeria 🇩🇿 1-0 🇸🇳 Senegal

Algeria 🇩🇿 3-0 🇹🇿 Tanzania

After scoring 6 goals and conceding none at the level of the group stage Algeria made long strides to the second round and for their excellent record at the group stage, earning 9 points, they were rewarded with a group B best loser in Guinea Conakry.

Algeria produced the highest scoreline in the round of 16’s when they forced 3 goals down the throats of Guinea Conakry without reply.

A relatively more difficult opponent waited in the quarterfinals. The Ivory Coast was fresh from leapfrogging Mali 1-0 in the round of 16’s. These two teams cancelled each other out but Algeria kept their cool from the spot to win 4-3 on penalties. That was the only time Algeria went beyond regular playing time to decide a game they played in.

At the semi’s, Algeria faced the super eagles. An own goal from William Troost Ekong and a 90th minute free kick by captain Riyad Mahrez, from over 22 yards speared the Algerians into the finals with a 2-1 win over Nigeria.

Against Senegal, Algeria got the early lead courtesy power, center – forward, Bounedjah at the 2nd minute to clinch it.
