Ghana’s Black Galaxies on Sunday recorded a 2-0 win over the Super Eagles CHAN team in the Championship of African Nations (CHAN 2023) Qualifiers’ first leg in Cape Coast.
Coach Salisu Yusuf started the game with Adewale Adeyinka Sunday in Goa alongside Temitope Olusesi, Ebube Duru, Emmanuel Oluwatosin Adegbite, Nosiru Afeez, Dare Samson Gbadebo, Babatunde Bello, Joseph Onoja, Adamu Abubakar, Chijioke Nnamdi Akuneto, and Andy Okpe.
After a goalless first half, Ghana found the opening goal of the game in the 49th minute from Daniel Afriyie.
In the 86th minute, Seidu Suraj doubled Ghana’s lead to give his side a 2-0 lead ahead of the return leg.
The return leg is scheduled for Saturday, 3rd September at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The winner of the game on aggregate will qualify for CHAN 2023 in Algeria.
Ghana has not qualified for the last two editions of the tournament while Nigeria didn’t qualify for the last edition in Cameroon.
Nigeria has qualified for three editions of the tournament with its best appearance in 2018 when the team lost to host, Morocco in the final.
Nigeria won the bronze medal in its debut tournament in 2014 before crashing out of the group stage of the 2016 edition.
Holders, Morocco has won the last two editions in 2018 and 2020 (which took place in 2021, hosted by Cameroon).
