Akwa United of Awka Ibom has qualified for the Super Six tournament of the Nigerian Professional League despite a 2-1 defeat at Delta Force.
The team who is currently topping the group B log with 37 points joins Rangers of Enugu to qualify for the tournament as El- Kanemi Warriors and Kano Pillars both dropped points leaving them 4 and 7 points adrift of the Uyo team with two games left.
Kano Pillars has 34 points while El- Kanemi has 30 points and this means that even if Akwa loss their two remaining games, they will still qualify as all teams have six points to fight for.
Awka joins Rangers, group A leaders to qualify as they both wait for the other four teams from the two groups of the NPL.
Awka, who had bought up to 18 players among them the league’s highest goal scorer Ufom Udoh, had started on a poorly after strings of losses and draws but resurrected at the right time to prove doubters wrong and to tell them the money spent at the end of the season was no waste.
They will be seeking to be one of the two teams to represent Nigeria in the 2019/2020 CAF Champions League.
The 2018/2019 Nigerian Professional League is in its abridged form this season in order to meet up with CAF calendar so as to produce their representatives for the Champions League. Hence, the the divisions of the 24 teams into two (group A and B). The three top teams in each group are to qualify for the Super Six where the league winner Champions League will be decided while four teams will be relegated from each group.
