It has not been a great tournament for Nigeria, Egypt and 14 other African countries at ITTF World championships going on Hungry. The Doubles especially in the male doubles has not given the continent anything to cheer about.
African hopefuls, Quadri and Assar Omar and their partners didn’t have it good as they crash out in the round of 64 while El- Beiali Mohammed and Saleh Ahmed remains the only hope as the play JHA Kanak and Liu Victor of the United States in Tuesday’s round of 34 tie.
For the women doubles, Africa has fired not too good especially the Nigeria contingent of Oshonaike Olufunke and Edem Effiong were both walked over by their Scottish counterpart after it was reported that Edem was injured. The Egyptian female doubles have remained resolute so far as Yousra Helmy and Fina Meshref and Farah Abdel-Axiz Reem El- eraky all progressed to the round of 34 after beating their counterparts from Argentina and Chile 4- 1 respectively.Farah Abdel -Aziz and Reem El- eraky play Sun Yin Yingsha and Wang Manyu from China while Yousra Helmy and Dian Meshref play Wu Yue and Lily Zhang from USA in Tuesday’s round of 34 games.
The mixed doubles have also seen all the African Counterparts crash out as Toriola Segun and Oshonaike and Olufunke of Nigeria and Assar Omar and Meshref Dina of Egpyt both lost 4-1 to their Turkish and Ukrainian opponents in the round of 64 respectively. While Assar Khalid and Helmy Yousra lost 4-0 to Madrid Marcos and Silva Yadira of Mexico.
16 African including Nigeria and Egypt teams qualified based on their participation in the continental tournament held in Agadir, Morocco, last year.
Other African countries that joined Nigeria and Egypt are Algeria, Botswana, Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville, Cote d’Ivoire, Gabon, Libya, Morocco, South Africa, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Togo and Tunisia.
Africans will still hope that in the singles players like Aruna Quadri and Omar Assar who are ranked 23rd and 47th in the world will give them something to cheer.
