Senegal and newly signed Chelsea defender, Kalidou Koulibaly has given his take on what he thinks about Aurelio De Laurentiis’s comment about chosing between the club and your national team.
In an interview on Wednesday, August 3rd, Napoli’s President, Aurelio said he will never sign an African footballer unless he agrees not to play the African Cup of Nations Competition which requires African players to defend their countries.
Koulibaly, regarded as a Solid rock and legend at Napoli has expressed dissatisfaction with the decision taken by his former boss.
The defender thinks African National Team needs to be accorded some respect thesame way it is done to European clubs.
“I respect every national team. We must respect African national teams just as we respect European national teams”
“I like to play for my country and no one can ask me not to play for my country”,
“As the captain of Senegal, I think it is not a good way to speak about the national team but I respect what he thinks. If he thinks that the team can play without African players then it is up to him. I think that not everybody has the same idea of the club as him” replied the African defense guru at a press conference this Wednesday in London.
“I know everybody there. I know the supporters and they don’t think like this. I know some people who are part of this association and team who don’t have the same idea as him. It is not the idea of the society or city because the city is very respectful to everyone” he continued.
Aurelio De Laurentii’s decision comes few months after Kalidou Koulibaly left Napoli for Chelsea after eight years of stay with the club.
During his stay at the Serie A club, the defender made four AFCON appearances with the Teranga Lions of Senegal.
Another observation which may have provoked Napoli’s President is the fact that he had three very instrumental players absent from the club during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Zambo Anguissa participated with the indomitable Lions of Cameroon and Defense man Kalidou Koulibaly was in Action for Senegal.
