The over 12 weeks of wait for the beautiful passing Spanish football is finally over.
The end of the Coronavirus is certainly near and the break imposed by the pandemic on LaLiga will soon be over.
We take the opportunity to familiarize ourselves with African players battling relegation in the Spanish Premier Laliga as the Spanish topflight league bounces back this weekend.
Espanyol is at the bottom of the log with 20 points. They still have fixtures against Barcelona and Real Madrid. They may get things tougher before the end of the season.
Kevin Soni of Cameroon is the only African player there even though he has not been regular with the side.
The attacking midfielder came to Spain in 2017 after a period in France with Bordeaux and Pau.
With 11 games to play, Leganes are in the 19th position with just 23 points.
There is much African interest at Leganes.
Even after the exit of Moroccan Youssef En-Nesyri to Sevilla in January, Nigerian duo Kenneth Omeruo and Chidozie Awaziem are both regulars at the side.
Roger Assale of Ivory Coast and Ibrahim Amadou with Cameroon trait is also with the club but has struggled to have much playing time.
Real Mallorca occupies the 18th spot with 25 points. Though they had a considerable improvement in their performance before the suspension of the league, they have to welcome Barcelona this Saturday which seems to be a tougher assignment for them.
There is a Ghanaian interest at the club
with full-backs Lumor Agbenyenu and Abdul Baba Rahman as well as defensive midfielder Iddrisu Baba.
Rahman Baba moved to Spain for a fresh start but he has been struggling with the injury that he had at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
He was ruled out for two months in September after an injury in his right knee and will again be missing for the resumption of the league.
Celta Vigo had an impressive form before the league was suspended with an unbeaten run in five games. They hope to step up their performance as they host Villarreal of Cameroon’s Zambo Anguissa on Saturday. They are currently at the 17th spot with 26 points.
There is also Ghanaian interest there with centre-back Joseph Aidoo who has made 23 appearances so far.
Former Inter Allies defender Aidoo moved from Genk to Spain in 2019.
He made his international debut last year and has been identified to be a key figure for the nation.
Eibar occupies the 16th position with 27 points hoping to be maintained in the league.
Senegalese fans would wish for the stay of Eibar due to the presence of veteran midfielder Pape Diop.
The 34-year-old has made 21 appearances so far this season.
With 12 years in Spain, the defensive midfielder has represented the likes of Levante, Espanyol and Racing Santander before joining Eibar in 2018.
With 29 points, Real Valladolid occupies the 15th position on the league log.
Ghanaian center-back Mohammed Salisu has been one of the reasons why Valladolid has the best defensive record in the bottom half of the table conceding just 33 as many as fourth-placed Real Sociedad.
Salisu has recently been linked with a move to Manchester United with a considerable fee of £10.4 million deal for the 21-year-old defender.
