Team Nigeria added two Bronze medals to her medal haul on Day 7 of 12th African Games taking place in Morocco, as Taekwondo was responsible for both medals on the day.
TAEKWONDO
Elizabeth Anyanacho lost to Egypt’s No. 1 seed Hedaya Wahba 14-6 in the semi finals of the women’s -67kg class to claim Nigeria’s first Bronze medal of the day. Anyanacho had earlier beaten No.4 seed, Morocco’s Wafae El Atri 22-18 in the quarterfinal.
Uzoamaka Otuadinma secured Nigeria’s 2nd Bronze medal of the Taekwondo event after she lost her semifinal bout 8-15 to Tunisia’s Amani Layouni in the women’s -73kg category. Otuadinma was dominant in her quarterfinal clash where she handed Somalia’s Ilhan Adam a 20-0.
TABLE TENNIS
Nigeria’s Table Tennis team continued from where they left on Day 6. The women’s team qualified for the finals of the team event, beating Tunisia 3-0 in the semis. They had earlier defeated the host nation, Morocco 3-0 in the quarter final stage of the competition.
Just like the women’s team, Nigeria’s men’s team also booked their place in the finals of the Team event. They swept aside Democratic Republic of Congo 3-0 in their semifinal tie.
3×3 BASKETBALL
The men and women’s 3×3 Basketball qualified for the quarterfinals earlier. The men’s team lost to Angola 16-13, and Mali 21-16, but still made it into the quarterfinals. Also, the women’s team defeated Niger 21-5 to qualify for the last eight.
BADMINTON
Nigeria’s contingent in the mixed event of Badminton pummeled their Ethiopian counterparts 5-0.
In the preliminary round of the men’s feather weight, Adeniji Yusuf lost 3-2 to Democratic Republic of Congo Rocky Bukasa.
ROWING
Lastly, in Rowing, Adeola Smart placed 6th in the women’s singles scull 500m Heats, while Suku Samuel was 4th in the men’s singles scull 500m Heats.
Team Nigeria ended the day with five medals (1 GOLD and 4 Bronze), with the team currently occupying the 11th spot on the overall medals table.
