German city of Düsseldorf and Durban of South Africa contested to host with their final bids submitted after Australia pulled out of the race to host.
At the end, Durban won 90 votes (69.77%) to beat off competition from the other candidate city, Düsseldorf, Germany, who won 39 votes (30.23%).
The two cities presented their bids virtually on the 21st of September, 2020 to convince of their worthiness to host the biggest table tennis tournament.
This year’s tournament could not be held due to the coronavirus pandemic which forced the ITTF to postpone a couple of times. The event is now due to be held from February 28 to March 7, 2021.
