AFN National Trials Day 1 wrap: Young atheltes, Bamtefa and debutant Kalu shine in Long Distance Race and Shot Put

The first day of the National trials taking place at the Moshood Abiola Stadium came with exciting times as new and young athletes gave stalin performances.

Athletes like young Yinka Bamtefa who clocked a brilliant 4:54.07 to win the women’s 1500m final and Kalu Eke Onwuka competing for the first time in 2019, won the men’s Shot Put event, winning with a Season’s Best of 16.68m shun bright in today’s games.

Besides, the days’s games started with the Women’s 10,000m final with Rose Akuso winning the Women’s 10,000m. She crossed the finish line at 36:16.11.

Rosemary Chukwuma yet again knicked another major National win, stopping the clock at 11.53s to win the 100m Final. Joy Udo-Gabriel, was closely behind in 11.56s while Blessing Ogundiran, secured the 3rd spot in a SB of 11.64s & Idamadudu 4th in 11.66s.

Adeyinka Bamtefa clocked a brilliant 4:54.07 to win the women’s 1500m final, which is over 9s faster than 2nd placed Hannah Adewale, with 5:03.51 & Maria Mandung in 5:16.99.

Hamid Sambo got his revenge over Ogunseye Adegoke who beat him at the #MoCGrandPrix, winning the race in 1:53.80. Adegoke finished 2nd in 1:54.17 and Dare Eniola 3rd in 1:55.36 in the 800 metres.

African Junior Champion, Princess Kara improved on her previous Personal Best of 50.04m which she threw in April in Abijan throwing a new PB of 50.57m to win the women’s Discus at the National Open Trials. Esther Nwokike finished 2nd, throwing a mark of 44.97m.

Emmanuel Arowolo, calmly won his first 100m Final of the season, clocking 10.43s. Alaba Akintola and Enoch Adegoke, who suffered an injury scare in the semis crossed the finish line in an identical 10.48s, to finish 2nd & 3rd respectively.
The National Trials is the trials set for the local athletes with respect to selecting a team for the 12th African Games happening in Morocco, Rabat.
