Some African countries have so far sealed their places in the 16th edition of U20 African Cup of Nations to be played in Mauritania in 2021. The competition which is being played in two years is the main international youth football competition for the Confederation of African Football CAF nations, and is competed for by under 20 year olds.
Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique, Namibia, Ghana and Burkina Faso, are all certain for a place in the competition including Mauritania who automatically qualifies as host.
Total U-20 Africa Cup of Nations previously known as the African Youth Championship will be hosted by Mauritania. Qualifications for this competition is done by games marking the qualifying stage followed by a final tournament played by 12 teams in a chosen country.
Six teams have been confirmed ready for the competition. A total of 12 teams is expected to play the final tournament.
Six zones namely North Zone
(UNAF), West A Zone
(WAFU-UFOA A), West B Zone
(WAFU-UFOA B), Central Zone
(UNIFFAC), Central-East Zone
(CECAFA) and South Zone
(COSAFA) Hosted CAF teams.
Three zones have so far released six teams which will participate
CECAFA zone (Uganda and Tanzania)
COSAFA zone (Mozambique and Namibia)
WAFU B zone (Ghana and Burkina Faso)
Six other teams are awaited to join the already qualified six to the next round of play
During the previous football season Mali emerged victorious meanwhile Nigeria is the lone country with seven trophies so far.
The top four teams of the tournament will qualify for the 2021 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia as the CAF representatives.
The 2021 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations will be played from the 14 of February to the 4 of March 2021.
