28_year_old FC Zurich forward Assan Ceesay, was on target twice as the Scorpions of The Gambia secured their place in the group phase of qualifiers for the 2023 TotalEnergies AFCON.
The scorpions of The Gambia have played a two all tie against the Sao of Chad, in a return leg preliminary round eliminators of the 2023 AFCON. The game was played on Tuesday evening, at the Adrar Stadium in Agadir, Morocco.
Tom Saintfiet’s Scorpions came from behind twice to shake off threats from the Sao’s of Chad. Chad had taken an early lead in the game through Ahmat Abderamane, but Assan Ceesay’s well taken efforts at the 33 minute, meant both teams returned we for the pause tight at one goal apiece.
Chad again went in front less than a minute into the second segment with a goal from N’Douassel Ezéchiel.
The Gambia kept pressing, and came close to leveling scores at the 54th minute, but Boubacar Sanneh saw his shot hit the woodworks.
A late Assan Ceesay’s goal from the penalty spot (92nd minute), secured an important draw for the scorpions in their new home in Agadir, as The Gambia progresses to the group phase 3#2 on aggregate.
The Gambia had won the away game hosted by Chad in Yaoundé, Cameroon, last week by a goal to nil. Boubacarr Steve Trawally scored the lone goal in that game.
Tuesday’s game coincided with Tom Saintfiet’s 49th birthday. The Belgian tactician led Gambia to the quarter final of AFCON 2021 in what was their debut in the competition. He now has another chance to continue writing history for The Gambian football.
The Scorpions now join Eswatini, South Sudan, Sao Tome and Principe and Lesotho, as teams who sailed through from the preliminary round.
Chad’s wait for an AFCON participation continues as the Central African Nation remains one of th few African countries that have never featured in the final phase of the AFCON.
