Haven taken an integral role throughout the AFCON qualifying rounds as Gambia finished top of their group, Steve Bubacarr Trawally was amongst 28 players that jetted into Samuel Eto’os country for the 33rd edition of the tournament with Gambia as debutants.
The UAE Ajman forward had since seen playing time drastically reduced to bench appearances as head coach Tom Saintfiet adopted new strategies for game by game approach.
This seem to have angered the player according to The Gambian press alleging Steve had promised to quit Camp if he wasn’t fielded in their second game of group F against Mali which ended on a one all tie.
Quizzed on the sudden departure from Camp of one of his trusted foot soldiers, Tom Saintfiet said he isn’t aware of any disgruntled player in his team for they live as a family.
On why Steve left Camp:
“He informed us that he wasn’t fully fit to continue in this competition and I have to believe my players especially after receiving an email from his club.”
“We need fully fit players, and if one isn’t, then we are willing to cooperate. Steve was very important in the qualifiers and we wished he had stayed with us till the end of this journey. He was an important player on and off the pitch but we now have 27 players all waiting to take their opportunities.”
We have a and we have to carry on with those at our disposal. It will be unfair to focus elsewhere when we know the challenge ahead of us.
