Indomitable Lions if Cameroon opponent in the race to Cote D’Ivoire 2023, the Harambe Stars of Kenya could have their ban from football lifted this week following a meeting between Kenyan government officials and officials of the World Football governing body -FIFA.
Last month Kenya was paired alongside Cameroon, Namibia and Burundi in group C of the qualifier for the 2023 AFCON but since then there have been reports only three teams could compete in the group as before the draw Kenya had been banned from all football related activities following the decision of it’s government minister of Sports Amina Mohamed to stripe power of officials of the Kenya Football Federation citing corruption allegations against the executive committee led by Nick Mwendwa.
As it stands, a normalisation committee needs to be set up to man football affairs in the country to prevent Kenya from being locked out from the AFCON 2023 qualifiers.
The previous committee which was guided by retired Justice Aaron Ringera ended. their six months mandate on Monday. And on Tuesday, a case in court that was challenging the Minister for dissolving the federation was dismissed in favour of the government.
FIFA obliged to work with the country’s government have begun holding meetings as part of the process of seeking a lasting solution.
Should all go well, Kenya will return to football activities in all sectors and the Harambe Stars will face Cameroon in June 2022 in Match-Day One of the journey to Cote D’Ivoire.
