As declared by the Confederation of African Football CAF earlier this year, Cameroon is expected to host the African Cup of Nations 2021 from January 9, to February 6, 2021.

The outbreak of the coronavirus has left the hosting country Cameroon, the organizers CAF and football Fans in a state of uncertainty. Several tournaments world wide have been suspended to safe the lives of players, officials and fans.

CAF is faced with the problem of either maintaining the original dates of move the competition to a later date. According to Samuel Eto’o on France 24, Cameroon is set to host the competition but health comes first.

“The most important thing is that we come out of the Covid-19 danger, and we will always have time to organise this AFCON. It is already confirmed for Cameroon. After that, it will just be a question of the date.”

“The most important thing and African football authorities have understood this, is health. I don’t see my big brother Ahmad [CAF boss] risking the health of football lovers for an AFCON.” Said Eto’o.

The four times African player of the year has been propagating the postponement of the tournament to June and to him whether the date pushed or not, “the hosting party will always be beautiful.”

The former Barcelona striker told RFI that
“Cameroon is a unique country, it’s a football country. The only regret I can have is that I cannot participate in this tournament as a football player,”

“We were able to note with great joy all the efforts made by the Cameroonian government and the Cameroonian people by giving all the sportsmen and lovers of football a stadium worthy of the stadiums of Europe.” Eto’o reiterated.

To him, there’s nothing to envy from Europe because Cameroon is grounded with six beautiful stadia in five cities of the country. (Yaounde, Douala, Garoua, Bafoussam and Limbe) where youths can enjoy and showcase their talents.

“We have nothing to envy today in certain European countries. Today, my young brothers have these infrastructures. We will do everything to make them ready to offer us one of the most beautiful African Cup of Nations ever organised,”

“But the one that is beautiful for us will be the one that we will win. Cameroon will be ready for Afcon. Cameroon already has everything to host Afcon.” Eto’o added.

In 2019 Cameroon was expected to host the AFCON, due to poor preparations the hosting rights were seized and given to Egypt.

Other than the AFCON 2021, cameroon will host the African Nations Championship CHAN and CAF Champions league finals 2020 which have all been postponed.

For all the uncertainties to be cleared, the COVID-19 virus has to be contained and subsequently activities will return to normal.
