Striker for Greek Super League side Aris Thessalonika and the Mauritania national team Aboubakar Kamara says he is optimistic as his side faces The Gambia this Wednesday, January 12 for their matchday one fixture at the Limbe Omnisport Stadium.
The 1.77m striker was speaking this Tuesday in a press conference that also had Coach Didier Gomes Da Rosa. The former Fulham striker did attest that even though despite them being an underdog, they have their country’s flag to look up to.
“We are focused and everyone knows what they have to do,” Aboubakar Kamara told journalists in a press conference ahead of their crucial encounter tomorrow.
“We have progressed well from an individual level. It is the coach who can best tell you from a collective standpoint but the team is moving on well.”
Mauritania is appearing in the Africa continental flagship tournament for the second time in a row, aiming at a better result than their maiden appearance in Egypt 2019 that resulted in a 1-4 defeat against Mali, and two goalless draws with Tunisia and Angola.
The objective of Mauritania will be to go beyond the group stage. And Coach Didier Da Rosa has called on the experience of Abdoul Ba (Al Ahly Tripoli, Libya) and Adama Ba (RS Berkane, Morocco) for the tournament.
“We are looking to raise the Mauritania flag. It is a dynamic team and the AFCON is for us to show that Mauritania football is progressing,” Aboubakar Kamara added.
Mauritania will be hoping for a victory against the Gambia looking at the tough challenge that awaits them in the second encounter. Mauritania will face Tunisia in their second encounter on January 16 at the Limbe Omnisport Stadium.
