Senegal’s football federation has described the sum of five Billions FCFA allocated as budget for the country’s participation in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon as low for AFCON title hopefuls like Senegal.
In an interview on local radio early this week, Senegalese FA President, Augustin Senghor declared the sum massively reported by the media as hefty for the Terenga Lions, is in its real sense, insufficient for teams as ambitious as Senegal during the forthcoming AFCON.
According to the FA Boss, nations harboring plans of bagging home the much coveted trophy, spend way bigger sums of money to finance their plans towards glorious participations in the event.
“Thanks to my connections at the Confederation of African Football, CAF and other football federation presidents, I can assure you we have one of the smallest budgets in terms of big nations willing to win the AFCON trophy.” Augustin Senghor partly said in an interview.
“Quite often, when we talk of budgets for the AFCON, the population think we spend immensely but I can cite five to six countries with bigger budgets than ours.” Augustin Senghor stated.
He also announced that Senegal, through its Ministry of Sports had put in place a committee charged with ensuring the country’s successful AFCON 2021 journey.
Augustine Senghor said the Terenga Lions will have way bigger sums of money spent on them if the team emerged champions of the upcoming festival in Cameroon. These, he declared, an agreement signed between the country’s ministry of sports and its national assembly.
Despite the claim by the FA Boss, financial experts in the sporting sector describe the country’s budget as one of the biggest for the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon and other passed sports events.
Senegal will be competing in Group B of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations where they will be facing Zimbabwe, Guinea Conakry and Malawi at the Kouekong Omnisport Stadium in Bafoussam.
The two time runners up and current Vice Champions, have been tipped as the biggest favorites for the 2021 AFCON title thanks to the team’s form in recent years, currently ranked first on the African continent and the star-studded squad Coach Aliou Cisse will be banking on in Cameroon.
Aliou Cisse will be relying on the likes of Liverpool star, Sadio Mane. Italy based defender and Captain, Kalidou Koulibaly and Chelsea goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy to help Senegal win its maiden AFCON title after coming closed in 2002 and 2019.
