One of the favorites for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon, Senegal will be without three of its key players during the team’s biggest Group B clash in the ongoing tournament against 1976 AFCON runner up, Guinea Bissau.
The Terenga Lions will be without forward Ismaila Sarr, defender Kalidou Koulibaly and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Watford forward Ismaila Sarr who represented the two time AFCON runner up Senegal in its first group game against Zimbabwe early this week on Monday January 10, was flown to Spanish city of Barcelona in the early hours of Wednesday for treatment according to information from the Senegalese Football Federation.
Italy based Napoli FC defender and Senegal Team Captain, Kalidou Koulibaly and Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy will both miss the team’s second Group B game against Guinea Conakry due to Covid-19 infections.
The state of affairs entails Mendy and Koulibaly will fail to feature in at least two of Senegal’s group games in the ongoing competition in Cameroon.
Despite the challenges, the Senegalese FA declared a number of its key players were cleared as at Wednesday January 12, to face the Syli Nationals.
France based keeper Alfred Gomis who led the Terenga Lions to the final in 2019, will be featuring in the Guinea game. Turkey based Super Lig attacking duo, Alanyaspor’s Famara Diedhiou and Mama Baba Thiam of Kayserispor as well as Olympique Marseille attacker Bamba Dieng are all feat to compete in the Group B crunch clash.
Senegal will be facing the Syli Nationals of Guinea at the Bafoussam Omnisport Stadium on Friday January 14, 2022 in its second Group B game of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament taking place in Cameroon.
The Senegalese are still regarded as one of the biggest favorites for the 2021 AFCON despite having recording an unconvincing 1 nil win against Zimbabwe in its tournament opener.
