The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon under the new technical team led by Antonio Conceiçao Da Silva will kick off their 2021 AFCON qualifying campaign against Cape Verde at the Yaoundé Amadou Ahidjo Stadium this Wednesday November 13, 2019.
Antonio Conceiçao will be looking to make a good first impression at the helm of the Indomitable Lions who had a disappointing AFCON 2019 campaign in Egypt.
The build up to this game has been dominated by questions over the selection of Shenzhen FC’s forward John Mary Honi Uzuegbunam. The Anambra in Nigeria, born Cameroon forward was not even on the waiting list, but he was invited to the surprise of many to replace the injured Jean Pierre Nsame, ahead of Angers’ Stephane Bahoken and Njie Clinton who are the two attacking players on the waiting list of five.
Honi has scored 9 goals in 12 league games for Shenzhen FC in the Chinese Super League. A goal for him today in Yaoundé will put the matter to bed, as he will be seen as a valuable addition to the team after all.
Cameroon needs a win and kick the new coaches reign off the mark with a wining start, given that even Antonio Conceiçao himself is highly contested by Cameroonians.
In their last 10 games, Cameroon have won three, drawn four and lost three.
In their last 10 games, Cape Verde have have won two, drawn five and lost three.
In their four previous meetings this century, Cameroon have won three while Cape Verde have one win to their name.
The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon are on a run of four games without a win, with three draws and a loss.
On their part Cape Verde have not lost any of their previous five encounters, only losing to Guinea after post match penalties.
Both teams have relative defensive solidity with five clean sheets for Cameroon in their last 10 games and four for Cape Verde in as many games.
The last meeting between this two teams dates as far back as October 14, 2012 and Cameroon were 2-1 winners with goals from Achille Emana at 22nd minute and Fabrice Olinga at the 89th while Heldon scored the opener at the 11th minute for Cape Verde.
Cameroon’s Predicted 11:
Ondoa; Ngadeu-Ngadjui, Jérôme Onguene, Oyongo Bitolo, Fai Collins; Zambo Aguissa, Pierre Kunde, Arnaud Djoum; Bassogog, Toko Ekambi, Choupo-Moting
Cape Verde’s Predicted 11:
Vozinha; Fernando Varela, Stopira, Nivaldo, Carlos Ponck; Babanco, Nuno Rocha, Platini, Helder Tavares; Heldon, Ryan Mendes.
Date- Wednesday November 13, 2019
Cameroon are the host country for the 2021 AFCON, so this game might be seen as a mere formality for them, therefore the stakes for the game are higher for Cape Verde. They know it will be a tough ask to win against Cameroon in Yaoundé which is a feat no other country in the continent has succeeded to achieve in over three decades now.
Cameroon are favorites to win this contest but it will be wrong to write off the Blue Sharks. There is therefore no room for complacency for Indomitable Lions.
