From a virgin tie on regular play time to a nine goal thriller on post match penalties against the Elephants of Ivory Coast, The Pharoahs of Egypt successful walked through the path of victory to the quarter finals of the African Cup of Nations 2021.
The Pharaohs launched their AFCON race on a detrimental ground, frustrating the hopes of the fans on match day one against the Super Eagles of Nigeria when Kelechi Iheanacho’s lone goal seized all three points from the Pharoahs . First game, first loss, played down on the moral of the players and cumulatively gave them a chance to improve and defend themselves as seven times champions of Africa which has been helping.
After matchday one, the Egyptians have been on a 1#0 win in two consecutive games, against group contenders Guinea-Bissau and Sudan, which to Arsenal’s forward Mohamed Elneny, the team is improving game by game, reasons for their successes despite facing giants.
“We improve game by game and today we played well infront of a big team like this. We did all we could and pushed hard to win. They have very good forwards, but we were able to play well and improved our game, everyone believed in us that is what gave us the win today.”
Emerging as Man Of The Match, Mohamed Elneny says it was as a result of collective efforts from the team “They helped me a lot to be the man of the match and we did all to win the game. Am glad to be in this team today.”
The Pharoahs will face Morocco in a North African Derby hoping to book a semi final spot.
29-year-old Mohamed Naser Elsayed Elneny is a professional Egyptian defensive Midfielder who plays for English Premier League side Arsenal FC. He started his football career with Egyptian side Al Mokawloon, later moved to Basel, then to Arsenal and Besiktas on loan.
Elneny debuted for Egyptian U20 national team in 2009,graduated to U23 and now with the Senior Men’s National Team. He counts 83 appearances with eight goals to his name.
