Malawi senior men’s national football team has had its squad strengthened in the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon.
The team will be having a full squad in the competition for the first time as the nation head towards it second Group B clash in the ongoing soccer campaign in Cameroon.
The Football Association of Malawi-FAM on Wednesday January 12 declared none of the team’s current 28 players in camp tested positive of the novel Coronavirus presently rocking havoc within most national teams competing in the 2021 African football festival.
The situation confirmed after the team’s traditional pre-match Covid-19 test on Wednesday will see Head Coach Meke Mwase having a cream of stars to select from during its game against Zimbabwe this Friday.
Malawi faced Guinea Conakry in its opening Group B AFCON 2021 clash with a fractured team. The Flames had less than 22 players available for the duel after Covid-19 complications deprived the team of at least six of its players summoned for the current African soccer jamboree.
On Monday this week, FAM through Flames’ Head Coach Meke Mwase and the team’s Technical Director, Marian Marinica brought five new players on board to integrate the team’s official squad including controversial midfielder, Gerard Phiri Junior who temporarily resigned from the Malawi national team after failing to make Malawi’s final 23-man squad.
Malawi is in its first AFCON participation since 2010 in Angola and its third ever appearance in the final phase of the event.
The team lost its first Group B game 1 nil to Guinea Conakry at the Bafoussam Omnisport Stadium on Monday January 11 and will be looking forward to pick an all-important win against the Warriors of Zimbabwe in its second game of the tournament on Friday January 14, 2022.
