At least three key Ivory Coast players will miss the Elephants opening game in the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
The two time champions will be without ace defender, Serge Alain Aurier, Wilfrid Kanon and Italy based midfielder, Jean Daniel Akpo Akpro when they face Equatorial Guinea in the team’s Group E AFCON opener in Douala on Wednesday January 12, 2022.
Former Tottenham Hotspur defender, Serge Alain Aurier and Egyptian Pyramids FC left back Serge Wilfrid Kanon will both be absent from the Elephants game against the Nzalang Nationals for disciplinary reasons having been sanctioned for the duel due to cards accumulated during the qualifiers to the ongoing tournament.
Serge Aurier and Wilfrid Kanon both accumulated two yellow cards during the qualification to the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon where the two time African champions battled out with the likes of 2019 AFCON debutants, Madagascar.
Italy based Lazio midfielder, Jean Daniel Akpo Akpro will be missing Wednesday’s game after being infected of the Coronavirus.
Akpo Akpro is presently undergoing isolation and a 20-day medical care at his club Lazio in Italy and may not be back on time to compete in the AFCON in Cameroon.
Efforts by the Ivorian Football Federation, FIF to have the player replaced in FIF’s 28-man squad was rejected by the Confederation of African Football, CAF.
The elephants’ keeper, Sylvain Gbohou will also miss Wednesday’s game after FIFA rejected FIF request to lift bans on the Elephants’ keeper.
