When the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament will kick start in Cameroon early next year, a few family relatives will be looking forward to participate in the event for their countries like it will be the case for the Ayew brothers, Jordan Ayew and Dede Ayew of the Black Stars of Ghana.
But for Senegal and Guinea Bissau, the story will be completely different as two brothers of the same parent, Alfred Gomis and Maurice Gomis will be looking forward to play for these two nations during the forthcoming AFCON competition in what will also be a complete display of a now very rich Gomis family goalkeeping legacy and diversity.
France-based Rennes goalkeeper, Alfred Gomis who represented Senegal during the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, will be in Cameroon again to represent the Terenga Lions like his elder brother, Lys Gomis did for the West African country during the 2015 event in Equatorial Guinea.
But unlike Lys, Alfred Gomis will be accompanied in the upcoming tournament by his junior brother, Maurice Gomis ironically set to feature for Guinea Bissau during the Pan African football tournament.
Maurice Gomis who recently made Coach Baciro Cande’s final 24-man squad for Guinea Bissau’s official squad for the tournament grew up in Italy like his two elder brothers Lys and Alfred, all mentored by their late goalkeeper father, Charles Gomis.
Maurice Gomis has represented Italy at several youth levels and like his elder brothers Alfred and Lys who both played for Italian side, Spal at the initial stage of their careers, also played for clubs in the European nation.
The 22-year-old whose father gave birth to them in the locality of Ziguinchor in a border region near Guinea Bissau, chose Guinea Bissau over his country of origin Senegal.
The youngster who received his first call up to the Djurtus of Guinea Bissau in May this year, will be looking forward to face his elder brother during the forthcoming event in Cameroon.
With the young keeper and his Guinea Bissau side lodged in Pool D of the 2021 AFCON alongside Egypt, Sudan and Nigeria, a possible qualification for the round of 16 of the upcoming event may see the Cyprus based Napa FC goalkeeper face his brother Alfred.
This, possibly in the round of 16 of the competition in Cameroon in what will be a remake of what the world experienced in 2014 when the Boateng brothers, Kevin Prince Boateng and Jerome Boateng both of Ghanaian origin, met while representing Ghana and Germany respectively during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
These, as the Gomis brothers continue displaying their incredible goalkeeping family legacy that has seen two of the brothers representing Senegal like their father did while youngster Maurice Gomis eye a spot for Guinea Bissau with the family’s youngest goalkeeper son, David Gomis also expected to make his final decision in the nearest future.
