Ace Ivory Coast forward, Didier Drogba trained with Ivory Coast’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations squad ahead of the Elephants second group game in the ongoing AFCON tournament in Cameroon.
The 43-year-old former Elephants Team Captain trained with the team at the annex of the Douala Reunifications Stadium in the Bepanda neighborhood on Thursday January 13.
Didier Drogba held the session alongside another Ivory Coast legend, Doumbia Seydou.
Seydou aged 34, helped Ivory Coast win the AFCON in Equatorial Guinea in 2015, three years after finishing as runner up in the 2012 edition of the tournament organized in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea where he featured in the competition with former Chelsea star, Didier Drogba.
No official information has been given by the Ivorian Football Federation-FIF on the reasons behind the stars presence in the course of the training, but pundits say the move falls in line with the FA’s plans to have the players motivated for the 2021 AFCON tournament currently taking place in Cameroon.
Drogba in an interview granted to the Ivorian FA early this week, said it will be important for past Ivorian players to visit the team in camp and transmit the Elephants fighting spirit to the nation’s current crop of players competing in the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.
Ivory Coast is competing in Group E of the 2021 AFCON alongside defending champions, Algeria and Sierra Leone.
The two time African champions defeated Equatorial Guinea 1 nil in the team’s opening group game of the ongoing African soccer gathering.
The West Africans will face the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone in their second group game of the competition on Wednesday January 19, 2022 at the Japoma Stadium in Douala.
