One of the debutants in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, The Gambia have defeated Guinea Conakry to qualify for the quarterfinals of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon.
The Scorpions silenced 1976 runners up, the Syli Nationals of Guinea 1 nil in a West African derby at the Kouekong Omnisport Stadium in Bafoussam on Monday January 24, 2022.
Bologna FC forward, Musa Barrow netted the lone goal of the game at the 65th minute of the highly animating third game of round 16 fixtures of the ongoing African soccer festival.
The Syli Nationals led by Head Coach Kaba Diawara attempted efforts to come back to the game but Musa Barrow and mates kept the side at bay.
The Guineans who played without their Team Captain, Liverpool’s Naby Keita due to Covid-19 issues, had their chances further complicated in the final minutes of the game after picking two red cards.
The Syli Nationals picked an 86th minute red when the side’s defender, Yusupha Njie was given a walking order following a dangerous tackle. Midfielder Ibrahima Conte also received an extra-time red card.
The Gambia managed by Belgian trainer, Tom Saintfiet are in their maiden appearance in the final phase of the Africa Cup of Nations competition.
The team will face either Cameroon or the Coelacanths of Comoros Islands in the quarterfinals of the tournament at the Japoma Omnisport Stadium in Douala.
