One of the debutants in the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, Comoros Islands has defeated four time African champions, Ghana to close their maiden campaign in style.
The Coelacanths overpowered the Blacks 3-2 at the Garoua Roumde Adjia Stadium Tuesday January 18, to exit the tournament with three points in three outings in their maiden appearance.
The Islanders opened scores in the fifth minute of the game through Ben Fardou Mohammed before increasing tallies to 2 nil at the 62nd minute of the game via Ahmed Mogni.
The Black Stars who lost their Team Captain Andre Ayew 25 minutes into the duel due to red card, bounced back in the second segment with two quick goals from Boakye Yiadom and France based Strasbourg defender, Alexander Djiku.
But the Islanders regained control of the game, with Ahmed Mogni sending in his second in the 85th minute of the game to put scores at, handing the Coelacanths a historic debut win in the biennial event.
The defeat entails Ghana is exiting the tournament with 1 point harvested in three games. The Black Stars lost their Group C opener 1 nil against Morocco before playing a 1 all tie with the Panthers of Gabon in the team’s second group fixture.
The group stage exit is Ghana’s worst record in the Africa Cup of Nations in 16 years. The Black Stars last elimination at the stage of the competition was in 2006 in Egypt where the side finished 3rd in Group D of the tournament behind Nigeria and Senegal.
