Gabon has had its chances of having a memorable participation in the 2021 Africa Cup of nations tournament compromised.
The Panthers’ Team Captain, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang returned a positive Covid-19 test result on Thursday January 6, 2022 according to information from the Gabonese Football Federation, FEGAFOOT.
Two other members of the Gabonese delegation recorded positive Covid-19 results following the tests conducted at the Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport including OGC Nice midfielder, Mario Lemina and Deputy Head Coach, Anicet Yala.
The positive Covid-19 test results returned by the former Arsenal skipper and his teammate, comes as fresh blew to the Gabonese Panthers after other internal issues marred the team’s pre-tournament camping.
The team’s flight to Cameroon from Saudi Arabia was delayed on Wednesday after players refused to travel to Cameroon due to unpaid bonuses with the players travelling almost hours after the original schedule without clear information on the circumstances surrounding their subsequent change of mind.
The potentially destabilizing Covid-19 news and other internal issues at the Gabonese delegations comes barely 4 days to Gabon’s first game in the forthcoming AFCON 2021 competition.
The Central Africans will face the Coelacanths of Comoros Islands in their tournament opener on Monday January 10, 2022 at the Yaounde Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium.
The 2017 AFCON hosts will be competing in Group C of the tournament alongside four time winners, the Black Stars of Ghana, favorites, the Atlas Lions of Morocco and debutants Comoros Islands.
