The central referee and two assistant referees to officiate the opening game of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon between Cameroon and Burkina Faso have been revealed.
Central referee Mustafa Ghorbal and assistants Etchaili Abdellah and Mokrane Gourari will take charge of the duel to pit the Indomitable Lions and the Stallions at the Yaounde Olembe Stadium on Sunday January 9, 2022, according to information from trusted sources at the Confederation of African Football.
The central referee Mustafa Ghorbal have been a full FIFA international referee since 2014.
The 36-year-old native of Oran in Northwestern Algeria have officiated more than 130 competitive career games including more than 114 in the Algeria top flight, Ligue 1 where he has been managing games since 2011.
Mustafa Ghorbal was in charge of five games during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt including one of the quarterfinal games of the competition between the Terenga Lions of Senegal and the Squirrels of Benin.
His biggest high profile career game was officiating the final of the 2019/2020 CAF Champions League between Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Zamalek at the Cairo International Stadium.
Mustafa has garnered refereeing experiences beyond the shores of Africa having been in central refereeing duties during the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup, the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup in Qatar and the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland.
The first assistant referee to partner central referee Mustafa Ghorbal will be compatriot Etchaili Abdelhah.
The Algerian Ligue 1 official, has been a FIFA licensed referee for over 6 years.
Abdellah has taken charge of games at major CAF competitions including the Champions League and the Confederations Cup. He has also taken charge of games in several international competitions, some out of Africa, having been among 30 referees selected for the Arab Cup in 2011.
The second assistant referee for Sunday’s opener, Mokrane Gourari has been managing games as assistant in the Algerian Ligue 1 since 2012.
The 34-year-old has been a FIFA recognized and licensed referee since 2014 and have been officiating games in numerous major competitions in Africa, among them the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup as well as CAF Super Cup.
He has managed games in the FIFA Arab Cup, a major tournament bringing together Arab nations.
The three referees as expected throughout the course of the tournament in Cameroon, will be assisted on Sunday by Video Assistant Referees, VAR.
The 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations will take place in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6, 2022 with 24-nations competing in six groups spread across five major cities in the country.
