Cameroon Indomitable Lions forward, Vincent Aboubakar has ended the group stages of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament as top scorer.
The Al Nassr man tops the rankings of the scorer’s chart with five goals harvested in three Group A games against Burkina Faso, Ethiopia and Cape Verde Islands.
The 2017 AFCON winner scored back-to-back brace against the Stallions of Burkina Faso and the Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia at the Yaounde Olembe Stadium in Cameroon’s first two group fixtures of the ongoing tournament.
The 29-year-old netted Cameroon’s lone goal against the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde Islands on Monday January 17 in the Indomitable Lions’ last group match to take his goal count to five, placing himself as one of the outright favorites for the golden boat of the 33rd AFCON festival being held in Cameroon.
Malian Ibrahima Kone, biggest threat to crown
Vincent Aboubakar who scored Cameroon’s winner against Egypt in the final of the 2017 AFCON in Gabon, is facing his biggest obstacle on his way to the 2021 AFCON golden boat from Malian forward, Ibrahima Kone.
The Eagles’ forward seats second on the scorers’ chart with three goals. Kone netted a penalty each in all of Mali’s three games in the group stages of the ongoing competition to move his tally to three goals.
The Norway based forward found the back of the net in Mali’s 1 nil win against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia, netted against The Gambia before scoring his third of the tournament against Mauritania in Mali’s 2 nil triumph over the Maurabitones on Thursday January 20, 2022.
The record puts the forward well on track to challenge for the golden boat of the tournament, Mali having qualified for the round of 16 of the 33rd AFCON festival.
Mali that finished as Group F winners with 7 points, will face Group E runners up Equatorial Guinea in the round of 16 at the Limbe Omnisport Stadium on Wednesday January 26, 2022.
Meanwhile, Cameroon led by Team Captain Vincent Aboubakar will be clashing with debutants Comoros Islands at the Yaounde Olembe Stadium on Monday January 24.
Cameroon ended the pool phase as Group A winners with 7points while Comoros Islands qualified as one of the third best placed teams after beating four time winners, the Black Stars of Ghana 1 nil to end the phase with three points.
