We have to go back to Angola 2010 to see as dismal a performance as the Black Stars are showing the rest of the African continent this 2019 football continental jamboree.
The four time winners of the AFCON separated on a barren 0-0 scoreline with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on Saturday June 29th, after they registered a 2-2 draw against Benin in the first day of play.
The balance sheet so far gives Ghana a tally of 2 points after 2 games. These poor results after 2 matchdays are only matched by their outing in Angola some 9 years back when Ghana couldn’t play against Togo who withdrew from that tournament for obvious security reasons, and went ahead to swallow a 3-1 defeat to the Ivory Coast – before leapfrogging Burkina Faso 1-0 courtesy Andre Ayew’s strike at the 30th minute that gifted Ghana a spot in the next round with 3 points.
This statistic must be an unwanted one for coach Kwesi Appiah and the Ghanaian fans who are currently starving for lack of silverware. Their last AFCON trophy came as far back as 1982, some 37 years a go.It is important to remark Ghana had exactly the same start in 1982 and went on to win the AFCON.
Ghana now needs a victory against Guinea-Bissau on the final day of play in the group stage-else, they would be looking at their worst performance in 13 years; the last time they didn’t make it to the next round; that was in the 2006 edition hosted by Egypt. Ghana ended in third position behind Nigeria and Senegal in that tournament.
With all these negative records looming together, with the injury worries in the camp of Ghana – fans of the one time African giant’s are suddenly beginning to think dark clouds that might be hovering all over the Black Stars of Ghana but not forgetting about 1982.
